We
met a couple in our Ham radio class who had just purchased their second boat, a 32’ Hunter. They were also planning
on living the cruising life and told us they had their previous boat, a 24’ Morgan named Points Unknown, up for sale.
Everything they knew about sailing they learned on that boat. The price was right, the hull had a full keel and the rudder
was controlled by a tiller, all aspects that mirrored the Westsails Don and I were considering for our cruising boat. We
discussed the idea of purchasing the boat as a training vehicle, and it didn’t take long for us to agree that we
needed some real, hands-on experience before making the tie-cutting plunge into a full-time cruising life style. Don put together
a wonderful survey, and we combed over Points Unknown while she was up on her cradle at Sandusky Harbor Marina in Ohio. She
wasn’t the prettiest thing, but her hull was sound, her engine was new, and she came with a huge complement of sails.
We bought her on May 1st, 2004 and scheduled to have her launched on the following Saturday. That summer we spent all the
spare time we had working on the boat, sailing and visiting all the area had to offer.
